Hello James: This is Gene Mitchell. If you read the web page and click on the story it will give you some details. I was camper in 1954, went up thru ranks to councilor and last year was 1964 except for visits after graduating. DeWitt was a special place for me. genem@bee.net --------------------------------------------------------------------- From - Sat Nov 08 22:39:11 1997 From: "James Moore" To: Subject: Re: CIT's in spirit forever.... Okay. I didn't realize the purple color was a link. You forgot to mention the CIT's! That was one of the most fun years I ever had. All false modesty aside, I got my silver medal that year and was honor camper for my cabin. I went to the Haverford School when I was growing up (third to eighth grades), and had Donald C. Boyer as a science teacher there. He never got my name right (quite intentionally) and used to poke fun at me by calling me "L.Z" instead of "J.T." Took me quite a while to figure out why he picked those initials... I miss him; he really had an impact on my life. David Huggins and I were counselors together in Cabin 6 back in 1984 or so. Him, I don't miss quite so much. No, seriously, he's one of my best friends and was in my wedding 5 years ago. Most everyone else sort of dropped off the scope after ten years. Although it's been ten years, I feel that I could go back and do it tomorrow (assuming, of course, DeWitt was still around). I guess the part I really am unhappy about is that my son, born three weeks ago, will never get to experience DeWitt. I was there when the development started to kick in (and did a protest of sorts by creating the character "Spike" for campfires. Spike drove up in the tractor and started to hammer surveyor's stakes in during the campfires). I left when I started law school - summers needed to be spend in firms back then, so I missed the absolute last year when part of the camp was actually under development. I'm sort of grateful that I have not been back since Camp is gone. I think it would be somewhat traumatic to see houses there instead of the lodge, fields, and sailboats bobbing in the cove. I wonder where my son can now go for such an experience...... James Moore wrote: Hi. David Huggins tuned me in to your Web Page. How is Bill? been a LONG time since I've seen him. Hi James: Just a late note after reading your last; Cabin 6 was my last 2 years also. I was in the Sr circle for several years and then guess I got demoted or something. I skipped CIT going from camper to kitchen to councilor. (Kitchen paid much better than councilor back then). It is nice to see it remebered so well. However, I think that you have your dates wrong. I was at Dewitt for the last ten years it was running, and by my records the last summer it ran was 1989. I should know because I was program director that year. I am glad to see that David Huggins has been in touch with you. He and I ran the archery department together for a number of years. He was one of the best counselors we had. I currently work in New York City. I teach at Friends Seminary, a small private school in Manhattan. I know of a few Dewitt alum in the city, do you know of any? Thanks for keeping this site up. John C. I was a camper and counselor at DeWitt from 1972 to 1988. I hope you get a good response from people. I am still good friends with a few of my old cabin mates, and I'll try to pass on the word to them about your page. It might be nice to have some sort of reunion sometime. DeWitt was a great part of my life, and I'd enjoy getting together with some of my old friends. I believe Dick Working has a summer or retirement home just down Roberts Cove Rd. from the camp. If you'd like a source of history, he would be excellent. I think he was there from around 1964 until it closed. One of the traditions he started was to have a log for each year. A counselor or camper would do artwork for the top of the log, then everyone would sign the log at the end of the summer. Honor campers signed the log in red ink at a special ceremony at the final campfire. It'd be interesting to find out if any of those still exist. Good luck to you in finding more people! Let me know if I can be of any help. I attended Camp DeWitt in the summer of 1976 between the sixth and seventh grades. I'm an alumnus of the Haverford School and had Mr. Boyer for Lower School science in the third grade (my goodness, that's a long time ago!). Mr. Boyer came to our house for dinner one evening in the spring of 1976 and brought some of his famous movies of Camp DeWitt. WOW!! All it took was a few minutes of watching his films to convince my father that I would have the summer of a lifetime at Camp DeWitt. It was wonderful, indeed, but I regret that circumstances permitted me to attend for only the one summer of 1976. I gather from your home page for the camp that it ceased operations in 1989? If this is true I would be saddened. I also gather Mr. Boyer passed away in 1987, but that his son is surviving? I seem to remember his son helping to run the camp, and vaguely remember him personally, but do not remember anything specific. The Boyers were fine people. I suppose you could say I had taken for granted that someday I might be able to send my own son to Camp DeWitt. However, since I have not been in touch in any way with the camp or with the Boyers after all these years, it was folly for me to presume that the camp was carrying on as if time stood still. I hope, however -- if Camp DeWitt has ceased to exist -- that its spirit can live on in us alumni. Please , I would love to hear from you and anyone who might have been at camp during our era. Especially looking for Jim Kennedy and Rodney Gott. Any word from them? Our family you might recall has a cottage on Alton Bay so I visit regularly. I hate to drive by the old camp site in my boat now and see all of the multi-million dollar homes that have replaced the cabins. I am an oncologist and have been in private practice and a professor at Penn State. I live in the State College area and have for the last 23 years. Now have 4 grown boys. My oldest was a counselor at DeWitt several years ago. I am still interested in camping. canoeing fishing and woodworking as when we were at camp Would love to hear from you and share a few memories and please send any addresses that you might have. I have also posted a message on the Winnipesaukee bulletin board at winipesaukee.com just incase anyone with a DeWitt background might be browsing Best Regards and looking forward to hearing from you Dick Dixon From - Tue Mar 31 08:39:52 1998 From: Gene Mitchell Reply-To: genem@g-c-o.com To: RICHARD DIXON Subject: Re: Camp Dewitt Home Page Hi: You made my day.
