Scanners There are 2 classifications of scanners, hand scanners and full page scanners. They both come in varying resolutions and features as well as color or black and while. Be sure you know what you are getting. Scanners are used to scan in photographs or line art or even text. You should know that scanning text requires good software called OCR or Optical Character Recognition. Any software less than $500 is junk. Word Scan and xxxx are fairly good. OCR is usually always less than perfect and you should proof read for errors. There are special boards with software costing about $20,000 that give near perfect OCR and anything less is quite imperfect. Microtek is our best recomendation for a quality scanner. There are several models costing $500 to $3000. Usually, low end color scanners require 3 passes for color. Scanner Interfaces include parallel port, SCSI, and propietary. You should plan for your computer in advance, especially since Pentium computers only have 3 or 4 ISA expansion slots.
