Installing Window's 256 Color Drivers Multimedia software and many Windows games require a 256 color driver in order to run. Sometimes, this doesn't give you all the information you really need. What is really needed is the 256 color driver for your particular display card and at the 640 by 480 resolution or whichever is requested. Display cards capabile of 256 colors at only 320 by 200 resolution is not whats needed. There are sometimes more than one way to install these drivers. Many newer cards have instructions in their booklet that define a procedure to install them thru windows and sometimes you can even change them from within windows. Here is how to do it if that is not the case. You will need your new card installed and your new driver disks handy along with all your Windows disks. You will be doing some disk changing too. From the DOS prompt, type CD\WINDOWS to go into the windows directory. Type Setup from DOS. In a few seconds, you will see a setup screen with several details about windows. Move the curser up to DISPLAY where you see VGA described for the driver. Press ENTER on VGA. You will see a list of drivers of all different types. Be Careful here. Go to the bottom of the list where it says "OEM driver" supplied by manufacturer Type ENTER Insert your OEM floppy driver disk in drive A or B whichever it is and again press ENTER You may have to type in so it says: A:\WIN and press ENTER again Follow the directions on screen and select your 256 color driver from the new list. Drivers are manufacturer specific, thats why the list from within Windows doesn't work, even if you see the 256 color driver listed. You will insert Windows disks 2,3, 5 or 6 in order requested but there is a bug in Windows and you may have to guess which disk it really wants. Just make sure of the drive letter and directory requested. When done, setup will show the 256 color driver where VGA used to be.
